Copy editors who want to (occasionally) write and be sociable need to raise their hands! That's an unfair burden and stereotype, I know. But even in the past couple of years, I've had convos with copy editors who are adamant about not wanting their role to change. And that's what management thinks all copy editors are like.
Amen, brother! "Publishers will need fewer, better editors – and ideally ones who also write. I don’t understand editors who just go to meetings all day. Better to be a player-coach than sit on the bench in a suit."
I just wish this excluded copy editors. I suspect we all need more of them, not less based on the number of stupid mistakes I find.
