It irks me deeply how little people are talking about generative search and its impact. Take the links away from the SERP and we're talking about potentially wiping out 60% or more of a given publication's traffic. Are people just in denial about how much traffic they get from Google? Are they in denial about whether or not Google is going to go full AI? Even in SEO groups I barely see the existential threat of it mentioned. What will an SEO person even be in 5 years?
The SEO aspect is going to be really interesting. GenAI is only part of it — Google is already degrading top-ranked search terms by piling 3-4 ads on top, plus all the other features/distractions. Same with no-click searches, although AI will accelerate that.
That said, eventually in B2B you need to click on something ... I hope.
